Why use a network

Connect two or more computers together.

Local Area Network (LAN) - within the office building etc.
• Increase productivity (sharing of resources)
• File sharing, shared database, applications
• Printer server, fax, scanner
• E-mail

Wide Area Network (WAN) - between two cities
• connected by phone lines etc




Types of LANs

Peer-to-Peer (Workgroup)
• No hierarchy - everyone is equal
• No central administration

Client-Server
• More powerful with dedicated Servers to meet the demand of all the clients on the network
• Centralized administration
• Passwords/security
• Requires use of a server



Types of Networks - Advantages & Disadvantages

Peer-to-Peer -
• Less expensive
• Low maintenance
• Easy setup
• Less security


Server-Based -
• Increase productivity
• Streamline operation
• Centralized data
