• Repeaters • Hubs • Bridges/Switches • Routers • Gateways • Multiplexers

Repeaters

• Signal diminishes over distance due to attenuation

• A device used to extend the distance of a network

• Regenerates the electrical signal on the network media
Hubs

• Basically a multiport repeater

• Connects a number of computers together in a star

• May have both coax or UPT connections to enable connection to another type of segment

Bridges

• Connects two network segments together

• Filters traffic that passes between the segments

• Only allows traffic destined to other segment

• Reduces congestion
Switches

• A switch is a bridge with multiple ports

• Connects more than one segment or computer together

• Only allows traffic destined a particular segment to pass

• Reduces congestion

Routers

• Used to connect complicated networks with many segments

• Filters traffic and makes intelligent decisions on the data path
Gateway

• Used to convert protocols between different types of network

• Filters traffic and makes intelligent decisions on the data path

Multiplexer (MUX)

• Combines multiple signals into one to be transmitted over a single cable or media

• Not base band
