		| Network Transport Systems • Ethernet - random access (IEEE 802.3) 10/100 Mb/s
 • Token ring- controlled by passing a token (IEEE 802.5) 4/16Mb/s
 • FDDI - Fiber Distributed Data Interface (token)
 • Arcnet - Attached Resource Computer Net (token star-bus)

 |
		| | Ethernet Most widely used type of network for PC environments

 Ethernet Protocol -
 • Uses CSMA/CD (Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Detect)
 • Unique address for each NIC (MAC address)
 • Data encapsulated in packets.

 Types of Ethernet physical connection
 Typical Network Interface Card
for Ethernet with Coax and UTP

 |
		| Common types of Ethernet cabling • 10Base-5: 10Mbps using RG-8 or RG-11 50 ohm coaxial cable to transmit baseband signals in 500-meter segments.100 nodes per segment, maximum length of network is 2.5Km. This is also known as Thick Ethernet.

 • 10Base-2: 10Mbps using RG-58 50 ohm coaxial cable to transmit baseband signals on 200-meter segments. 30 nodes per segment, maximum length of network is under 1Km. This is also known as Thin Ethernet.

 • 10Base-T: 10 Mbps using UTP cabling (CAT5) and RJ45 connector jacks to transmit baseband signals on 100-meter segments. 512 nodes per segment, maximum of 1024 nodes in total. This is also known as Twisted-pair Ethernet.

Other variations of Ethernet connections -
 • Fast Ethernet 100 Mbs, 100Base-XX
 • Fibre Optic 10Base-FL, 100Base-FL
 • Gigabit Ethernet 1000Base-XX
